New Magnolia Volunteer

The Butterfly bushes got their annual haircut this weekend.  We hope they come back in full glory this summer.  While cleaning up from the ice storm and cutting down the bamboo that didn't spring back, I found a new volunteer Magnolia tree.  I cleaned up all the scrub around it so with luck it will grow into a tall tree.  We thought we only had one Magnolia tree so it is nice to see another one sprout.

Two More Ice Pictures

Here are the last two pictures from the ice storm a couple of days ago.  Another shot of the poor drooping bamboo leaning on the ground.  The good news is the ice has all melted and some of the bamboo has popped back up about half way so it is still bent but not touching the ground.  There are at least 5 bamboo trees that broke so will have to be cut down.

More Ice Pictures

The ice storm was rough on a bunch of our plants.  One of our Butterfly bushes had a thin coating of ice covering every branch and leaf.  Luckily it was leaning on the deck so it didn't break down to the ground.  Further back in the yard, our lone Magnolia tree also had a coating of ice with ice cycle hanging from the branches and leaves.

Wicked Ice Storm

Yesterday we woke up to a coating of ice on everything.  The bamboo in the back yard took this especially hard.  These bamboo trees are about 50 feet tall and they are bent all the way to the ground.  Some of the trunks have already split and I suspect most will not be able to stand up tall again.  When the weather warms, I'll have a lot of bamboo to cut down to get it out of the yard.
